Drive Pulleys

Drive pulleys for crusher line rebuilds need to be true, balanced and suited to the duty on the plant. Crusher Spare Exchange lists inspected used stock for quarries and mines that need dependable parts without the lead time of new manufacture.

Drive Pulleys For Crusher Duty

A drive pulley transfers power from the motor to the crusher shaft or conveyor drive, so condition matters just as much as size. In crushing plants it works under shock load, dust, vibration and long operating hours, which is why we list only pulleys that still have usable grooves, hubs and bore surfaces for rebuild work.

These pulleys are commonly used on jaw crushers, cone crushers, screens and transfer conveyors where the plant team is replacing a worn unit or keeping a shutdown moving. The right pulley should match the belt profile, shaft diameter, centre distance and duty rating, otherwise you get slip, heat build-up and premature belt wear.

Sizes, Bore Options And Common Build Details

Used drive pulleys vary by machine, but the most requested sizes on our Middelburg yard are medium to heavy duty units for crusher lines and belt systems. We list the outside diameter, face width, shaft bore, keyway detail and where available the hub style, so buyers can compare quickly before collection or delivery. On some stock, the exact bore is known and on others it is supplied for re-bore by your workshop.

  • Outside diameter: commonly from 300 mm up to 1 200 mm
  • Face width: 100 mm to 500 mm, depending on belt count
  • Bore size: standard shaft sizes or re-machinable blank bore
  • Configuration: flat, crowned or grooved as supplied by the original application
  • Material: steel or cast construction, depending on unit
  • Accessories: hubs, taper bush sleeves or locking assemblies where retained

If a pulley is going back into a crusher line rebuild, we also check whether the shaft seating is still sound and whether the previous keyway damage will affect alignment. A pulley can look fine from the outside yet still need machining before it can go back into service, so a proper inspection saves grief later.

Where Used On Quarries And Mines

Drive pulleys suit fixed plant where uptime is critical and the maintenance team is working around scheduled shutdown windows. They are useful on quarry plants around Middelburg, eMalahleni, Rustenburg, Polokwane, Kathu and Pietermaritzburg, especially where a site has a spare drive train but not enough time to wait for new supply.

They are also a practical option for mines that keep a stock of serviceable exchange parts for winter and peak production periods. In dusty inland areas and coastal humidity alike, the pulley must match the application and not just the dimensions, because belt slip and corrosion can become a problem faster than many teams expect.

  • Primary and secondary crusher drives
  • Screen drive assemblies
  • Conveyor head drives and transfer lines
  • Shutdown replacements when the original unit is cracked or badly worn
  • Exchange stock for plants that need a quick swap and inspection turnaround

Installation, Alignment And Power Considerations

Most crusher drive pulleys are fitted with an electric motor drive, so the key checks are power transfer, shaft fit, belt tension and pulley alignment. If the motor output is too high for the pulley duty, or the belt profile does not match, the unit will run hot and wear the edges fast. There is no gas requirement on this type of part, but the drive system must be matched to the installed motor and gearbox arrangement.

Before fitment, the mounting face should be clean, the shaft checked for scoring and the key properly seated. During installation, verify the set-up under lockout procedure and confirm that guards are returned to place before start-up. On some plants the old pulley has been reused after a quick clean, which is not ideal if the bore is oval or the hub has developed a hairline crack.

Our team can assist with fitment checks, and where needed we can arrange collection from site and delivery back to your yard. That helps when a shutdown is running tight and the crew cannot spare extra man hours for repeat removal.

Care, Servicing And Signs Of Wear

Used pulleys can give good service if they are kept clean, aligned and monitored for wear. Dust from manganese, fines and belt debris tends to build up on the sheave surfaces, so routine cleaning during planned stops matters. In coastal or high moisture areas, rust can form on exposed edges and fasteners, making future removal harder than it should be.

Look out for groove wear, chipped flanges, damaged keyways, loose hubs and overheating around the bearing area if fitted in a complete drive assembly. If the belt is running off-centre, the pulley may be the source or it may be revealing a shaft problem, so the full line should be checked rather than only the visible part. A pulley that sounds okay on start-up can still be out of balance under load, which is why inspection notes matter.

  • Keep grooves free of grit and build-up
  • Check for wobble after installation
  • Inspect fasteners and locking assemblies during shutdowns
  • Replace cracked or heavily grooved units before belt damage spreads
  • Store indoors or under cover when not in use

What To Check When Ordering Used Drive Pulleys

When ordering, send the pulley diameter, face width, bore size and whether you need the complete unit or a reworkable shell. If you have the old part on hand, the easiest route is to share photos from the side, face and hub area, plus the machine details from the crusher line or conveyor. That makes it easier to match the fit and avoid delays.

Also confirm the direction of rotation, belt section, centre distance and whether the pulley must match an existing spare in your plant. If the item is going to a mine or quarry in another province, tell us if the delivery point has loading restrictions, yard rules or limited receiving hours. We can organise palletising and packing, and where needed, consignment sales for units that are still usable but not yet assigned to a job.

  • Diameter and face width
  • Bore, keyway and shaft size
  • Rotation and belt profile
  • Required condition: fit now, inspect first, or re-machine
  • Site location and delivery timing
  • Whether you want exchange, direct sale or surplus listing

Middelburg Supply Base For Exchange And Delivery

Crusher Spare Exchange is based in Middelburg, Mpumalanga and supports quarries and mines across South Africa with listing, inspection, storage and delivery of surplus crusher spares. Our yard team in Middelburg handles receiving and storage, while logistics can move parts to eMalahleni, Rustenburg, Polokwane, Kathu, Pietermaritzburg, Secunda and Lydenburg as required.

We work with clients who need a practical answer during load-shedding, after a breakdown or during a planned shutdown. If a drive pulley is suitable for exchange, we record the condition, place it in storage if needed and move it when the order is confirmed. That keeps useful stock in circulation and helps reduce waste on site. It also saves time when a line is down and the crew needs a part that is ready to go, not sitting in a corner waiting for attention.

Questions we get asked

Can a used drive pulley be reused on a crusher line?

Yes, if the groove wear, hub condition and bore are still within usable limits. We recommend an inspection before fitment, especially on high duty plants.

What details do you need before I order?

Send the diameter, face width, bore size, keyway detail, rotation and the machine application. Photos of the old part help a lot too.

Do you deliver outside Mpumalanga?

Yes, we arrange nationwide delivery from our Middelburg base, including quarries and mines in other provinces.
